What is NiV(Nipah Virus)

Nipah virus (NiV) is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus is fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family. (the virus often infects animals such as pigs and fruit bats), Pteropus genus.
“A disease that animals can transmit to humans, known as a zoonosis.”

The world’s first Nipah virus was identified in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998. The virus survives in the bat’s body without causing disease, allowing it to jump to susceptible mammals like pigs or humans when they come in contact with the bat.

HOW NiV SPREAD

NiV is an air Borne Transmission Desease. It means that if anybody comes under the influence of an infected person, then he too is very much likely to be affected. The virus directly spread from Human-to-human transmission occurs during close contact between family members, medical caregivers and/or people’s secretions and excretions. This is also capable of causing disease in pigs and other domestic animals.

 

HOW NiV VIRUS SPREAD STARTED IN KERALA

Some infected mangoes found in people’s house who died due to this Virus. It is suspected that those infected mangoes must be bitten by fruit bats and these peoples consumed those mangoes unknowingly.
Some are Suspecting that the insectivorous bats roosting in wells could have spread the disease. Till now spread of the Nipah virus (NiV) that took 12 lives, including one who is suspected to have died after contracting the virus, in Kerala’s Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

SYMPTOMS

• Vomiting
• Fever and headache
• A sore throat
• Atypical pneumonia
• Dizziness
• Muscle pain
• Drowsiness and mental issues such as confusion
It may take from 4 to 14 days to appear after a person gets infected. In severe cases, Patients may go through increasing breathlessness and may progress to severe oxygen hunger rapidly. It can also progress to encephalitis which is an inflammation of the brain and patients can slip into a coma within 24 to 48 hours and can lead to death also.

PREVENTION

• Do not consume date palm sap and partly eaten fruit
• Before consuming you can boil freshly collected date palm juice.
• Don’t climb trees where bats may have left their saliva or secretions.
• one should avoid a contact with the saliva of an infected person.
• Thoroughly wash and peel fruits
• Wear higher masks
• Wash hand properly with soap

There is no particular vaccine or drug available for the treatment of Nipah Virus.
Currently, a drug used is ribavirin whose effect is very minimal and limited. Although ICMR(Indian council of medical research) is taking help from Australia who developed an antibody. An antibody which could fight the virus to neutralize it. This antibody is found be effective after the test. But till now the test is not carried out for any human body. however, Australia is ready to share the antibody to India to see it’s effectiveness.
